Mission Statement

Physicians' spouses in partnership with medicine, working as volunteers advocating for medicine and medical families.

The Travis County Medical Alliance, founded in 1924, has a history supporting the citizens of Travis County. General membership meetings with guest speakers, philanthropic opportunities, backing organized medicine, and many social engagements are offered to our members: the spouses of Travis County physicians and some physicians, as well. Your membership is welcome!

Volunteer Work & Community Service

Our members have many opportunities to support a variety of service projects with their time and financial resources.

Be Wise--Immunize: Alliance members coordinate immunization events in Travis County, participate in the Immunization City Collaboration, and provide Welcome Baby immunization cards to new parents in area hospitals.

Ronald McDonald House: The Ronald McDonald House of Austin is a temporary home-away-from-home that provides lodging and support services to families of critically ill or injured children receiving treatment in Austin area medical centers.  The TCMA supports the Ronald McDonald House by providing meals every Tuesday to the families staying there.

Hard Hats for Little Heads: Hard Hats is a collaboration project between TCMA, TMA and People's Community Clinic. In just the first half of 2008 we have donated 200 helmets to children who couldn't otherwise afford one. Dr. Louis Appel, Medical Director and Director of Pediatrics at People's Community Clinic oversees the distribution to needy children during their Well Child Checkups at the clinic. Dr. Appel provides educational materials on helmet use and bike safety and requires each child to sign a safety pledge certificate. We are thrilled to be collaborating in 2008 with MIX 94.7’s JB and Sandy Bikes for Kids to provide bike helmets for approximately 800 bikes to be given away in December. TCMA volunteers will help fit helmets for children receiving bikes from JB and Sandy. The Alliance has also distributed bicycle helmets to children at the Livestrong Kids Adventure Race as part of the Armstrong Foundation Ride For the Roses Weekend.

Project Graduation: Funds are provided to area high schools to support drug-and alcohol-free graduation parties.

Nursing Scholarships: Endowments provide nursing scholarships each year to one ACC student and one UT student.

Science Fair: Monetary donations support the area-wide science fair.

Literacy Outreach: The Literacy Outreach Committee supports BookSpring, a program to launch children into a world of reading. BookSpring is the result of the March 2008 merger of two literacy programs: Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Capital Area Reach Out and Read (CAROR).

The TCMA is now in its third year of involvement with literacy outreach.  Our volunteers deliver gently used children's books to the Rosewood-Zaragosa Clinic twice weekly, and will begin to deliver books to a south Austin clinic this year.  Our work is part of the three part program to promote literacy in children, which includes:

  1. At every well-child check-up, doctors and nurses encourage parents to read aloud to their children and offer age-appropriate tips and encouragement.
  2. Providers give every child between the ages of six months and five years a new, developmentally appropriate children's book to keep.
  3. In literacy-rich waiting room environments, often with volunteer readers, parents and children learn about the pleasures and techniques of looking at books together.

Our members support this program not only with volunteers, but also with books and donations of money to purchase new books to be given to the children on their well-child visits to the doctor.

At each general meeting, our committee will have a box available to collect donations of children’s’ books. Checks may be made out to BookSpring and mailed to 2006 Greenbrook Parkway, Austin, TX 78723 or handed to a committee member.

Grants: In 2008, through our annual grant application process, the TCMA supported the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic, which provides free medical care for the uninsured in Travis County. Many of the clinic’s more than 400 volunteers are members of the Alliance and Medical Society. Because of our grant, the clinic completed its expansion/renovation project and opened their new doors debt free.

We are proud that the TCMA won the Dedication to the Mission award at All Med, the annual statewide TMAA convention in San Antonio on May 3, 2008. In honor of our work with Volunteer Healthcare Clinic, this award was presented to the county with the project that most clearly epitomizes the promotion of the TMAA.

In previous years, in keeping with the focus of working for a healthier central Texas, the Travis County Medical Alliance Executive Board has awarded community service grants to numerous Travis County healthcare-related organizations. This money was raised with donations received from physicians and their spouses through the annual fund drive and with profits received from our sold-out charity Gala. Recipients of past year's grants include: Any Baby Can, The Arc, Swim Safe, Capital of Texas Reach Out and Read, Family Eldercare, Hospice Austin, Sammy's House, Shoes for Austin), Camp Sweeney, Children's Wellness Center, Vin Care/St. Louise House, Volunteer Healthcare, Women's Advocacy Project, Wonders & Worries, and LifeWorks.
